ETSU nursing students living in Nevada
Nevada puts two hurdles in front of a nursing student from a school outside the state: a Nevada license before touching patients, and board approval before an online program teaches clinically there. East Tennessee State University (ETSU) adds a split of its own, with the College of Nursing calling Nevada undetermined and ETSU's consumer information tables judging the MSN and DNP compliant.

A Nevada license comes first
The Nevada State Board of Nursing has ruled, in a published practice decision, that anyone treating patients located in Nevada needs its license, and it counts hands-on nursing education in that scope. The practical upshot for you is a Nevada license before the first clinical shift. Nevada never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact and no bill to join is moving, so a Tennessee multistate license is no help; the APRN Compact has not been enacted either.
Nevada licensure also covers ETSU's MSN requirement, because the MSN takes a license from whichever state hosts the clinical. The ETSU DNP is different: it looks for a Tennessee or compact-state license, and a Nevada license is neither. Sort out the combination early with the RN license page.

The College has reached no determination for Nevada; the university tables call each graduate program compliant. ETSU does not rank one page over the other, so write to the College of Nursing and the Nevada board about your program and catalog year before enrolling. Board approval for online programs
Nevada's administrative code, at NAC 632.703, asks a school that runs any part of its program in Nevada to file a report on the board's form, attach proof of its accreditation or approval, demonstrate compliance with Chapter 632 of Nevada's law and code, and report every year. Online and other nontraditional programs may not offer clinical instruction in the state without the board's approval, and their faculty in the state must be Nevada-licensed. The rule makes no distinction between pre-licensure and graduate education.
The board's out-of-state list, updated in September 2026, names schools approved to deliver only their clinical portion in Nevada, and every one is an ADN or BSN program. ETSU makes graduate placements outside Tennessee depend on approval from the appropriate regulators, and in Nevada this board is one of them. Ask the College how it would treat a Nevada rotation, and read clinicals outside Tennessee.

How Nevada frames a precepted clinical
A board decision from 2005 describes how precepted student clinicals should run. Faculty direct every one of them and can be reached by phone while it happens. The preceptor stays on the premises and supervises two students at most. The school orients each preceptor and hands over written objectives.
AANP lists Nevada among full practice states, with a prescribing caveat: Schedule II prescribing opens to an NP after two years or 2,000 clinical hours, with an earlier route through a physician-approved protocol. Experienced NPs there practice on independent authority, and ETSU's Intent Form lists physicians among its credential examples too.
Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City
The 2025 census estimates count about 2.4 million people in greater Las Vegas, which takes in Henderson and North Las Vegas, some 579,000 around Reno and roughly 59,000 in Carson City. In the south, NP students look at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the Valley Health System, Sunrise Health System and the Dignity Health hospitals in Las Vegas and Henderson; around Reno, Renown Health is the system to know. Use these names to start your own inquiries; none is presented as a site set aside for ETSU.

Questions ETSU students ask
Can I do ETSU clinicals in Nevada on my Tennessee license?
Plan on a Nevada license instead. Nevada sits apart from the compact, and its board treats hands-on care for patients located in Nevada, student clinical work included, as practice requiring a Nevada license. Apply early, and keep every license you hold unencumbered, since ETSU acts on any encumbrance.
Does ETSU say its MSN meets Nevada's requirements?
One ETSU page says yes and another has not decided. The university consumer information MSN page, with June 2025 tables, marks Nevada as meeting requirements; the MSN page on the College of Nursing site, revised September 2025, lists it as not yet determined. Settle the difference with the College and the Nevada board before enrolling.
Is there a cap on students per preceptor in Nevada?
Yes. Under the board's 2005 practice decision, one preceptor handles two students at most, working on site with them. ETSU's Preceptor Intent Form also asks how many students your preceptor supervises at once, so answer it with Nevada's cap in mind.
Is ETSU's RN to BSN an option from Nevada?
The university BSN table lists Nevada as meeting requirements, while the College page lists it as not yet determined. ETSU's RN to BSN page also mentions that out-of-state residents could end up completing clinical hours with a Tennessee agency or institution.
