Preceptors under Michigan's delegation rules

Because controlled-substance prescribing by Michigan NPs runs through physician delegation, the practices you approach will have a physician involved in that part of care. ETSU's Intent Form lists NP and physician credentials among its examples, so either can be a candidate for faculty to review. A quick credential check for an NP: Michigan only grants NP specialty certification on top of two things, a current Michigan RN license and national certification the Board accepts.

Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, near 4.4 million people, is far larger than Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, Lansing-East Lansing or Flint. Henry Ford Health, McLaren Health Care and Corewell Health are three systems to research; University of Michigan Health and Trinity Health Michigan are two more, each with separate student rules.

Is a Michigan RN license required for ETSU clinicals in Michigan?

Yes, because Michigan has not joined the compact and ETSU's MSN needs an unencumbered RN license valid where your clinicals take place. Budget time for Michigan's extras: a criminal background check, the human-trafficking course and the implicit bias hours, all before the license issues.

Is there a Michigan incentive for my preceptor?

Nothing current turned up. The state health department once paid preceptors through a pilot, but it was limited to Michigan State University's FNP and PMHNP students and is now marked completed. No enacted Michigan preceptor tax credit turned up either.

Does the Michigan Board of Nursing need to hear from ETSU first?

No rule or guidance saying so was found. The Board's approval rules cover schools located in Michigan, and it recognizes outside programs through national accreditation. ETSU's own gate still applies: regulator approval for any site beyond Tennessee, and an individual review of yours.

How can I check that a Michigan NP is able to precept me?

Look for two things: a current Michigan RN license and Michigan NP specialty certification, which the state grants only on top of national certification from a recognized body. Both numbers, with expiry dates, go on ETSU's Intent Form, where the College's student services office checks them.
