ETSU nursing clinicals in Indiana
Indiana gets a clean result from East Tennessee State University (ETSU): each of its licensure disclosures marks the state as meeting requirements, so the online MSN and DNP are open to Indiana residents on paper. What shapes your clinicals is Indiana itself: a board that stays out of graduate education, a collaboration rule for nurse practitioners, and metro areas that spill into Illinois and Kentucky.

The College of Nursing and the university's consumer information pages agree on Indiana, which is not true for every state; the side-by-side disclosures page shows where they split. Agreement answers the licensure question only. A graduate clinical outside Tennessee still goes through ETSU's case-by-case review after admission.
Indiana's board leaves graduate programs alone
Indiana's Board of Nursing, housed in the state's Professional Licensing Agency, accredits Indiana's own entry-level RN and LPN programs. RN to BSN and graduate programs, in the Board's own description, fall outside its review, and the state's eligible-program rule is written only for pre-licensure schools.
In practice, no Indiana paperwork turned up for ETSU students, graduate or RN to BSN, training at an Indiana clinic. That keeps the Indiana half simple. ETSU's half is unchanged: regulator sign-off plus a signed site contract, as our page on clinicals outside Tennessee sets out.
Collaboration and your preceptor pool
AANP groups Indiana with its reduced practice states, because an Indiana NP needs a physician collaborator under a state-regulated agreement that reaches at least one piece of their work. The NPs you approach already work with a physician partner, and the sample credentials printed on ETSU's Preceptor Intent Form run from FNP and ANP to MD, so both kinds of clinician can be candidates. Your clinical faculty decide whether a given person suits the course.
Systems you will meet in an Indiana search include Indiana University Health and Parkview Health, plus Ascension St. Vincent, Community Health Network and Franciscan Health. Treat each as a place to ask, with its own student process, rather than as a site reserved for ETSU.
Chicago and Louisville reach across the line
Two Indiana metro areas are anchored in other states. Census estimates for 2025 put about 729,000 Indiana residents in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin area and about 281,000 in the Louisville/Jefferson County area, while Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood, at roughly 2.2 million, and Fort Wayne sit wholly inside Indiana.
If the best preceptor near you works across the state line, the site's state governs that clinical. ETSU's university pages list Kentucky and Illinois as meeting requirements, but the College of Nursing pages call both not yet determined. Questions ETSU students ask
Is Indiana an approved state for ETSU's online MSN?
Both ETSU disclosures list Indiana as meeting licensure requirements for the MSN. ETSU wants anyone applying from beyond Tennessee to check first with their home board of nursing, and once you are admitted it weighs every non-Tennessee rotation on its own, so mention your Indiana address early.
Will Indiana's nursing board need to sign off on my ETSU rotation?
Indiana's board says its program reviews cover schools that train new RNs and LPNs, leaving RN to BSN and graduate programs aside. No Indiana sign-off for an ETSU graduate rotation was found. ETSU's own approvals, the site contract and your RN license still apply.
Could an Indiana physician serve as my ETSU preceptor?
Physicians do appear in ETSU's own paperwork: MD is one of the sample credentials on the Intent Form, next to FNP and ANP. Whether a particular physician fits your course is up to your clinical faculty, based on the site's patient mix and the course's population focus.
Where does an Indiana RN to BSN student do the ETSU practicum?
Full-time direct-care RNs may complete NRSE 4026 at their current employer, and others arrange a clinical with the College of Nursing. If you live outside Tennessee, ETSU may ask you to log those practicum hours with a Tennessee institution or agency instead, so ask the College how that applies to you.
