ETSU nursing clinicals in Ohio
Ohio asks for no board filing from nursing schools based elsewhere and has honored compact licenses since 2023, so the state half of an East Tennessee State University (ETSU) clinical there is fairly light. ETSU's half is the question mark: the College of Nursing still has Ohio as not yet determined, whereas ETSU's consumer information tables find the MSN and DNP meet Ohio's requirements.

Neither page claims to override the other, so treat Ohio as open until the College of Nursing and the Ohio Board of Nursing have both answered for your program. Keep their replies with your admission papers. The licensure disclosures page maps the whole split.
No Ohio filing, one statutory condition
Ohio's nursing law contains no step where a Tennessee school must seek the board's permission or even notify it. What the Revised Code offers instead is an exemption: section 4723.32(F) lets an APRN student train in Ohio outside its licensing requirement, provided three things hold: the program prepares them for a national certification exam (or ends in a qualifying master's or doctorate), the program sponsors the clinical work, and the person supervising is an APRN acting for the school as faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor. Undergraduates from programs approved by another NCSBN member board have a parallel exemption in 4723.32(A).
Notice who the graduate exemption puts in charge: an APRN. Physicians are among the sample credentials on ETSU's Preceptor Intent Form, yet for a rotation in Ohio an NP preceptor lines up with the statute most cleanly. Standard care arrangements
AANP rates Ohio as reduced practice. An Ohio NP never outgrows the standard care arrangement, a written tie to a physician or podiatrist who collaborates, and Schedule II prescribing depends on the practice setting. Any NP you approach already works under such an arrangement, so a clear request that names your course and its dates helps them say yes.
Count your hours before you count preceptors. ETSU's plan of study lists 540 clinical hours for the MSN FNP across five practicums, four of them tied to a specific patient population, so an Ohio FNP student may need more than one preceptor over the program. Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Dayton
Ohio's biggest metros are close in size. Columbus and Cleveland each top 2.1 million residents, the Ohio share of greater Cincinnati runs past 1.7 million, and the Dayton area adds roughly 827,000. Cleveland students look at Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, Columbus students at OhioHealth and the Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State, and Cincinnati students at Bon Secours Mercy Health. Their student processes differ, and listing them here says nothing about ETSU placements.

Is ETSU's online MSN available to Ohio residents?
ETSU's pages split. The MSN page of the College of Nursing, updated in September 2025, puts Ohio under not yet determined; the June 2025 consumer information table for the MSN says the program meets Ohio's requirements. Before enrolling, get the College of Nursing and the Ohio Board of Nursing to confirm your program.
Does Ohio require ETSU to register before I train there?
Ohio's nursing law has no board approval or notice step for schools based in other states. Graduate APRN students are exempt from Ohio licensure while training under their program's auspices with an APRN supervising. ETSU runs its own individual review of any graduate rotation beyond Tennessee once you are admitted.
Can an Ohio physician precept my ETSU NP course?
ETSU's Intent Form accepts physician credentials, but Ohio's exemption for APRN students expects an APRN, whether faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor, to do the supervising. Ask your clinical faculty and, if needed, the Ohio board before relying on a physician-only rotation in Ohio.
Can I use a Cincinnati-area preceptor in northern Kentucky?
You can propose one, and Kentucky's rules then apply to that rotation. ETSU's College pages list Kentucky as not yet determined while the university pages say it meets, the same split Ohio has. Check both states' boards before choosing a site on either bank of the river.
