Training in Kansas as an ETSU nursing student
For East Tennessee State University (ETSU) students, Kansas is a meets-requirements state on all four disclosure entries, and Kansas asks for no board sign-off before you start an online NP program from another state. KSBN's expectations, point by point
- When the board looks at ETSU: the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN) reviews an out-of-state APRN program only at the end, when one of its graduates applies for Kansas APRN licensure. No board approval is needed before a Kansas resident starts.
- Your preceptor: oriented to the course, signed onto an agreement, and holding Kansas APRN licensure for the same role you are training in. KSBN's regulation on this is K.A.R. 60-17-104.
- Your ETSU faculty: no Kansas license needed to teach you online. Kansas does not require faculty to show up at your site, and a faculty member who stops by comes as a guest.
For an FNP student, the practical upshot is a nurse practitioner holding a Kansas APRN license, not someone licensed as an APRN only in another state. When you fill in ETSU's Preceptor Intent Form, the Kansas license is the one to enter, with its number and expiry.
Your own license is the easy part. While training, you practice on your RN license as an advanced practice nursing student under K.S.A. 65-1124, and KSBN takes either a multistate license or one issued by Kansas alone. Kansas joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in July 2019; the APRN Compact is not law there.
What KSBN checks when you apply as an APRN
At application, KSBN confirms national accreditation, at least 45 credits overall, and three credits apiece in advanced pharmacology, pathophysiology and health assessment. It then counts clinical hours in the role and specialty: 500 if your admission came before March 1, 2025, and 750 if it came after.
On ETSU's side, the MSN FNP plan of study counts 540 clinical hours and the BSN-DNP FNP plan 1,040, both from plans dated 2020 to 2023. Set your own catalog year's plan of study beside KSBN's current checklist and raise any question with the College of Nursing before planning your Kansas APRN application around it. Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan
AANP places Kansas in its full practice category, so an NP preceptor there practices without a required physician agreement. Kansas City's metro straddles the Missouri line, with roughly 938,000 of its residents in Kansas; the other Kansas metros are Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan. Wesley Healthcare, an HCA hospital in Wichita, is one name you will see. Stormont Vail Health is another, as are The University of Kansas Health System and Ascension Via Christi, each with separate student rules.

Questions ETSU students ask
Must Kansas approve ETSU before I start its online NP program?
KSBN's guidance on programs from other states says Kansas residents can begin an online APRN program without any prior board approval. The board looks at the program later, once you apply for a Kansas APRN license. Because ETSU tells out-of-state applicants to clear the program with their own board, a short note to KSBN before you apply is still wise.
Could an APRN licensed only in Missouri precept me in Kansas?
Under KSBN's guidance, whoever precepts your APRN clinicals in Kansas should carry Kansas APRN licensure matching your role, because supervising APRN students there calls for it. A Missouri-only APRN would need to add the Kansas license first. Confirm your own situation with KSBN.
Will ETSU faculty visit my Kansas clinical site?
ETSU publishes nothing on faculty site visits. On the Kansas side, KSBN requires none, and online faculty need no Kansas license; anyone who does visit is a guest at the site. Your preceptor's mid-term and final evaluations run through ProjectConcert, and course faculty can explain how your practicum is assessed.
What RN license covers my ETSU clinicals in Kansas?
Kansas accepts two kinds: its own single-state license or a multistate compact license. KSBN treats you, during clinicals, as an RN studying advanced practice nursing. On ETSU's end, the MSN wants that license unencumbered and valid for Kansas (or Tennessee), and the same clean standing applies to any other license you carry.
