NRSE 5014: Nurse Practitioner II Practicum with older adults
NRSE 5014 Nurse Practitioner II Practicum is a 3-credit, 120-hour course in the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) FNP plan of study, and the Preceptor Intent Form names it the Older Adults Practicum. Every FNP plan schedules it in a fall term after at least one summer practicum, which gives you months to plan the search.

In ETSU's 2023 FNP plans, NRSE 5014 Nurse Practitioner II Practicum runs in the same fall as NRSE 5013 and follows NRSE 5012 as the second numbered NP practicum. The Intent Form label, Older Adults Practicum, tells you which patients your preceptor must see. Nothing more from the 2026-27 catalog entry was readable, so the syllabus fills in the rest.

Each plan then moves to NRSE 5024 Children and Adolescents Practicum the next spring, so the older adult rotation sits right before the pediatric one. Hunting for both preceptors in the same stretch saves a second scramble in December.
Older adults on the Intent Form
Older adults get their own line in the Intent Form's patient table, with a percentage and a daily headcount, and for this course that line is the one faculty weigh. A site can be strong in every other respect and still fall short for NRSE 5014 if few of its patients are older.
The same form holds a trap. Its course menu also includes the AGPCNP course NRSE 5032 (Older Adult Chronic Health Practicum), which is not an FNP course. The form is an older document whose year menu ends at 2021, so ask the graduate clinical coordinator for the current version; the Intent Form page explains each field.
FNP students select NRSE 5014 on the Intent Form. NRSE 5032 is the AGPCNP older adult practicum.
Settings that can fit an older adult practicum
ETSU lists no settings for NRSE 5014. When it describes the post-graduate FNP certificate, though, it names health departments, nursing homes and primary care clinics as places FNP-prepared nurses work, which puts long-term care inside the FNP role as ETSU sees it. Whether nursing home or home-visit hours count for this course is a question for course faculty and the syllabus.
A primary care preceptor with many older patients answers the form most directly, and rural practice deserves a look. Who can precept NRSE 5014
Among the credentials the form prints as examples is ANP, next to FNP and MD. That matters for this course: an adult nurse practitioner, like a family NP or a physician, is a credential the form anticipates, and faculty judge whether that person suits an older adult focus.
Tennessee sets the outer frame in Rules 1000-01-.01 and -.11. A preceptor needs an unencumbered license in the state of practice, pitched no lower than the credential you are pursuing, and competencies that line up with the course. Nursing faculty direct all clinical learning, preceptors add to faculty teaching rather than replace it, and schools track preceptor licenses through Nursys e-Notify. Fall calendar points for NRSE 5014
The fall 2026 term opens August 24, classes end December 3 and finals follow from December 5 to 10. Campus closes September 7, October 12 and 13, November 11, and November 25 through 27. Census, the last day to drop without a W, is September 6, and October 12 is the last date for a course withdrawal that needs no dean's sign-off.
Before you build a schedule with the preceptor, ask course faculty whether clinical days may land on university closure dates. If NRSE 5014 falls in a later fall for you, use that year's calendar; 2026-27 is the most recent ETSU has posted. A few answers from course faculty shape the whole search, so get them before you approach anyone:
- The age at which a patient counts as an older adult for this course.
- Whether hours in long-term care, assisted living or patients' homes are accepted.
- Whether you can divide the 120 hours between a primary care preceptor and a second site.
- The hour total faculty expect to see by mid-term.
- What the ProjectConcert patient journal should capture for each older adult encounter.
- Whether the course uses letter grades or pass/fail.
Give the answers to your preceptor in writing. Settling the age focus and hour split before day one avoids an awkward mid-term conversation.

Is NRSE 5014 the same as NRSE 5032?
No. NRSE 5032 Older Adult Chronic Health Practicum appears on the Intent Form for AGPCNP students. The FNP course is NRSE 5014 Nurse Practitioner II Practicum, labeled Older Adults Practicum on the same form. Check the number against your registration before you submit.
Can a physician precept NRSE 5014?
MD is one of the form's three example credentials, beside FNP and ANP, so physicians are among the preceptors ETSU anticipates for NP courses. Tennessee's rule sets the license at your target level or higher, and ETSU faculty decide course fit when they review the request.
Can NRSE 5014 hours be done in a nursing home?
ETSU has published no setting rules for this course. Its certificate page counts nursing homes among FNP work settings, which makes the question fair to ask, but only the syllabus and course faculty can say whether long-term care hours count toward the 120.
Does NRSE 5014 come before the pediatric practicum?
Yes, in every ETSU FNP plan: NRSE 5014 in a fall, then NRSE 5024 Children and Adolescents Practicum the following spring. Because the two run back to back, it makes sense to line up both preceptors during the preceding summer.
What if my NRSE 5014 preceptor leaves partway through the fall?
Contact course faculty and the graduate clinical coordinator the same day. If the hours cannot be finished in the term, an Incomplete is possible only once 75% of the course is done and the cause was outside your control, and the rest must be completed within a calendar year.
