Need a preceptor fast for an ETSU practicum
Before a preceptor can start teaching you at East Tennessee State University (ETSU), several sign-offs have to land, and ETSU publishes no lead time for any of them. When the term is weeks away, speed comes from running every step at once and choosing the sites that clear quickest.

What must be true before day one
ETSU's Preceptor Intent Form lists the conditions plainly, and none can be skipped to save time. Your start date waits until all four are in place:
- your clinical faculty member has approved the preceptor for the course;
- the Office of Student Services has verified the preceptor's credentials;
- a contract covers the site;
- your own clinical requirements are met, including immunizations and liability insurance.
There is no published submission deadline and no published contract lead time, which is exactly why a late search has to move today. A new site's agreement carries the most unknowns, so it is the question to settle first. The Intent Form notes that progress on all of this is tracked in ProjectConcert. The 2026-27 dates pressing on you
Three dates frame a late start: the first day of class, census and the dean-permission withdrawal date. Leave of absence requests are due by census as well, so census marks the point where a late placement stops being a scheduling problem and becomes an academic decision.

What a late start does to your weekly hours
Your course's hours stay fixed when the start slips, so every lost week is spread over the weeks left. The table is plain arithmetic on ETSU's plan-of-study totals across a 15-week fall or spring term; your course faculty decide which weeks you may actually log.

Summer is tighter still. ETSU's full-time FNP plans schedule NRSE 5012 alongside NRSE 5022 that summer: 240 hours in about 13 weeks, roughly 18 a week from day one and more than 21 if you start two weeks late. See the summer clinical semester guide.

- Today: tell ETSU in writingEmail course faculty, with the graduate clinical coordinator copied, from your @etsu.edu account, the official channel. Say you are unplaced, and ask whether any site you are considering is already under contract with the College.

Which sites clear fastest
When time is short, choose the site with the fewest open questions. A practice that has hosted ETSU students may already have its agreement in place, and a preceptor who has done ETSU's paperwork before fills it in quickly. Ask the coordinator whether an agreement exists before you spend a week on a new site.
Large systems keep their own clocks. Ballad Health wants a current affiliation agreement, a request routed via your program's clinical coordinator and its student orientation done before a placement begins. Covenant Health's portal page asks students to begin at least two weeks before a rotation. The Tennessee NP preceptors page covers each system from its own pages.

If the start date cannot be met
Some terms cannot be rescued, and it is better to decide that on purpose than by default. Dropping before census leaves no W on your record but moves the practicum, and possibly the courses tied to it, to a later term. Withdrawing after census leaves a W; past the dean-permission date (October 12 this fall, March 9 next spring), whether it is a W or a WF depends on your standing at that point. For a practicum that never started, the earlier decision is usually the cleaner one.

Questions ETSU students ask
How long does ETSU take to approve a preceptor?
ETSU does not publish a timeline. Approval involves your clinical faculty, a credential review in the Office of Student Services and, for a new site, a contract, and each moves at its own pace. A complete first submission avoids the slowest delay of all, a rejection and resubmission, so ask the coordinator what is realistic.
Can I start clinical hours before my preceptor is approved?
Plan on no. ETSU's form requires every sign-off, the site contract and your own compliance to be complete before any clinical day. If you are unsure whether a particular day can count, ask your course faculty before that day, not after it, and keep their answer.
Why does the census date matter for a late placement?
It is your last chance to drop the course with no W on your transcript: September 6 in fall 2026 and February 1 in spring 2027. Requests for a leave of absence are due the same day and cannot be made retroactively. If your placement may not start in time, raise it with faculty and your advisor beforehand.
Can I request a spot at ETSU's nurse-led clinics at short notice?
Only after the window for that term opens. Spring requests are taken from October 1, summer requests from March 1 and fall requests from May 1, and anything earlier is not considered. Accepted students must show a recent background check, immunizations, TB screening, CPR and several ETSU safety and privacy trainings.
Does a summer practicum need a preceptor sooner?
In practice, yes. The Summer 2027 complete term starts May 17 and runs about 13 weeks, shorter than fall or spring, and some plans place two practicums in the same summer. A late start is harder to absorb, so aim to have your summer preceptor approved during spring.
