Alaska and ETSU's online nursing programs
East Tennessee State University (ETSU) lists Alaska as meeting requirements on every disclosure it publishes, so the program itself is not the obstacle. Two Alaska rules shape the clinical side instead: each out-of-state APRN student registers individually with the Alaska Board of Nursing before a preceptorship, and Alaska stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Both ETSU sources agree on Alaska for every program from the BSN to the joint DNP, which puts it among 16 states beyond Tennessee's immediate neighbors where nothing needs reconciling. You are still expected to run the program past Alaska's board before applying, and ETSU reviews any graduate clinical beyond Tennessee individually after admission. Alaska registers the student, not the school
Many states that police out-of-state clinicals do it program by program. Alaska does it one student at a time. If you are an APRN student, the board's FAQ says you apply to it for a preceptorship yourself, under a rule (12 AAC 44.460) that lets the board register people in APRN study based in another state. The filing, form 08-4253, carries a fee that is not returned.
The board wants to see three things: an RN license in good standing, from Alaska or elsewhere; evidence of current APRN enrollment; and a preceptorship it signs off on, documented with the agreement that you, your preceptor, the facility and ETSU have signed. Registration expires 12 months out or when the preceptorship finishes, if sooner, and you may renew it once.
ETSU's MSN FNP plan of study spreads 540 clinical hours over five courses, so map the registration window against your own plan of study and catalog year. Because the board wants that signed agreement, the site paperwork, including the contract ETSU needs before clinicals, has to start early; see clinical contracts.
In Alaska you register with the board yourself, and each registration covers 12 months at most.
Full practice and who can precept you in Alaska
AANP classes Alaska as a full practice state. The registration form describes an acceptable preceptor as an APRN or a physician whose license or practice privilege is active and unencumbered, whose practice focus is comparable to yours, and who will supervise, teach and evaluate you on site. ETSU's Intent Form expects the same mix; its credential examples run from FNP and ANP to MD.
Anchorage is by far the largest metro at about 406,000 people, with Fairbanks-College near 94,000 and the Juneau micropolitan area near 32,000. The tribal Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage is one name NP students weigh there. Others: HCA's Alaska Regional Hospital, Mat-Su Regional in Palmer, Foundation Health Partners (operator of Tanana Valley Clinic and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital) and Providence Alaska Medical Center, whose parent, headquartered in Renton, Washington, is Alaska's largest hospital operator. These show where the search happens, not sites committed to ETSU.
Your license: Alaska sits outside the compact
Alaska is not a compact state; per the board, two bills to join, House Bill 131 and Senate Bill 124 of the 2025-2026 legislature, were still pending. A Tennessee multistate license therefore gives you no practice privilege there. The registration is more flexible: an RN license in good standing issued by any state satisfies that part of it.
ETSU's rules add a wrinkle. For the MSN, ETSU takes an unencumbered license from Tennessee or from the state you train in, so either a Tennessee or an Alaska license qualifies. The DNP line reads Tennessee or a compact state, and Alaska is neither; ask the College how that applies to an Alaska-only nurse before enrolling. The APRN Compact is not law in Alaska either. Questions ETSU students ask
Can I do ETSU FNP clinicals in Anchorage?
Possibly. You need ETSU's approval of the placement after its case-by-case review, your own preceptorship registration with the Alaska board, a license the board accepts, and an APRN or physician preceptor in a comparable focus. The site also needs a contract with ETSU before your first day.
Does a Tennessee multistate license let me train in Alaska?
Not as a compact privilege, since Alaska is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. The board's preceptorship registration does accept an RN license in good standing from another state, so ask the Alaska Board of Nursing how that fits your case, and confirm with ETSU which license your program requires.
Can I complete ETSU's RN to BSN while living in Alaska?
Alaska's board asks RN to BSN distance students for two things only: national accreditation plus home-state approval for the program, and a current RN license with no encumbrance from any US state or territory. ETSU's RN to BSN page adds a limit: state regulations may send out-of-state students to a Tennessee institution or agency for clinical hours.
Do ETSU faculty need an Alaska license to supervise me?
Only past a threshold. Alaska's rule counts the working days ETSU faculty spend grading your Alaska clinical work, together with any other nursing teaching or consulting they do in the state; past 20 such days in one licensing period, an Alaska RN license becomes necessary. ETSU handles that side, but it is one more reason to plan early.
